Champagne Masterpiece
Stunning & Exciting

Adrien Renoir continues to be the most exciting “new” producer in Champagne.

This boutique Champagne house based in Verzy is producing some of the most compelling expressions of Grand Cru Champagne from the Montagne de Reims. This is Pinot Noir territory with highly sought after and coveted pockets of Chardonnay. Following in the footsteps of Anselme Selosse and Fred Savart, Adrien Renoir is specializing in unique tiny vineyard parcels, producing amazing singular variety site specific Champagne as well as multi-vineyard blends focused on the best of the village.

"The young Adrien Renoir took over this four-hectare domaine in Verzy a few years ago, launching his eponymous label in 2019. Working exclusively with estate fruit, he abandoned herbicides in 2015 and attained organic certification in 2020. Planting hedges and trees around and within his parcels, he's a pioneer of agroforestry in his sector. In the cellar, Renoir started out with one or two barrels and, appreciating the results, now vinifies everything in barrel, maturing his reserve wines in oak foudres. Winemaking here is artisanal, with ambient yeast fermentations, lees stirring and no temperature control. The wines are disgorged with jetting but without any added sulfites and dosed with MCR (moût concentré et rectifié, i.e., concentrated and rectified grape must). The style is vinous and gastronomic but with all the incisiveness that one expects from serious viticulture in terroirs such as these. Last year, I characterized Renoir as one of Champagne's brightest young talents, and these new releases only confirm that judgement." –William Kelly, the Wine Advocate

Renoir’s Le Cepage blend has impressed me from the first time that I tasted it and like many Champagne the magnums are just so much better! With the launch of the label in 2019, Renoir has slowly been expanding the cuvees released. Le Cepage, unlike the Le Terroir blend, is 100% Pinot Noir focused on the mineral and saline qualities of Verzy’s vineyards. Here the vineyard sites used for Le Cepage average vines that are 40 years of age and Renoir is looking to showcase the quality of the harvest for Verzy.

The young Renoir is also not afraid to eschew normal convention and with Les Montants we are shown a pure Chardonnay from Verzy Grand Cru planted in Chalk. In Verzy the veins of Chalk that pop up are truly special and yield some spectacular wines. While Pinot Noir dominates the planting on chalk in the region the Renoir family has planted Les Montants to 30% Chardonnay and Adrien has decided to use the vines planted in 1961 as the star of the Les Montants Blanc de Blancs. Here we have a full-bodied and textured expression of Chardonnay that has a spine of energy akin to the best of the Cotes de Blancs famed Grand Crus.

The commonality of the two wines is the salinity and minerality they both present as Le Cepage pulls from the Pinot Noir planted at Les Montants.

For me, Champagne Adrien Renoir is not producing a masterpiece but a bounty of masterpieces that is sure to continue and expand over time. Adrien Renoir is destined to be one of the most lauded and collected masterful Champagne artists of the next 50 years.
