Old-Vine Chambolle-Musigny
Great Wine for the Money

Domaine Hudelot-Baillet is an estate in Chambolle-Musigny that has quietly been on the rise. With holdings only in Chambolle-Musigny, Hudelot-Baillet, due to its size, has been very much under-the-radar. Since 2004, this property has been under the direction of Dominique Le Guen who along with his wife have taken the property from obscurity to “vigneron to watch.”

The village of Chambolle-Musigny is full of great vignerons who are typically very reserved when offering opinions on what is happening in Burgundy and who to watch, but when two of the biggest neighbors and sought-after domaines in Chambolle-Musigny both independently mention Dominique Le Guen is someone to watch, we take note.

We have been following Hudelot-Baillet for several years now and consistently the one wine that always gets our attention is the old-vine Chambolle-Musigny Villages. Dominique blends three different single vineyards together for this cuvee that averages between 60 and 70 years of vine age. Here the older vines present a depth and energy that is more structured, focused and taunt compared to the straight village wine. The consistency and quality is what has really impressed us over the years as this wine can easily compete with many premier cru wines pound for pound.

The 2021 vintage simply cements this notion. Here the power of the blend sites gives this wine the complexity, structure and impact that many single vineyard wines in Chambolle lacked in the vintage. Neal Martin quality-wise places the old-vine Chambolle next to the domaine’s Bonnes-Mares before all the premier cru wines. It is truly an “Excellent” wine as Neal Martin describes and one that is very much a rewarding experience for lovers of Chambolle-Musigny.

Cheers,
Jeremy
