A New Chapter In Traditional Barolo Beppe Colla is one of Piedmont's great founders of modern winemaking. Colla, while not as widely known as Giacosa or Bartolo Mascarello, is one of the most influential winemakers and growers whose impact began in 1949 and is still felt today even after his passing in 2019. Colla was a driving force of single grape wines and the transition to dry structured reds. Colla and Ratti were among the first to speak of single vineyard wines and put those names on the labels. In 1956, Colla purchased the Prunotto winery and set off decades of marvelous Barolo until the family sold to Antinori and decided to create a new estate, Poderi Colla. Today, the wines of Poderi Colla are transparent expressions of their terroir with an "old-school" feel that roots the wines firmly on one side in what is perceived to be traditional Barolo from the 1960s while on the other side a modern classicism and sensibility. Noted by their beautiful transparent colors, bright acidity and firm, yet refined tannins, the Poderi Colla wines are explosive aromatically and ultimately are some of the most graceful wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Cheers, For more of the rich history of Beppe Colla and the foundation of Poderi Colla, we encourage you to visit the excellent Poderi Colla Website for articles, interviews and detailed information on the estate. |
