From Volnay to the Jura
Masterful White Wines
Guillaume d’Angerville and Francois Duvivier are making their greatest white wines - in the Jura!
The master of Volnay, Marquis d’Angerville, has successfully established Domaine du Pelican as one of the premier properties in the Arbois-Jura region. The collection of vineyards that d’Angerville has assembled is priceless. Only someone like Guillaume d’Angerville could expand from the heart of Burgundy into the Jura like he has. It is more than just having the financial means, it is about having the personal connections and respect of the community and vignerons of the Arbois.
Guillaume is one of the great statesmen of Burgundy. A true gentleman and icon that assumed the mantle of Domaine Marquis d’Angerville seamlessly and in his own steadfast way brought about massive improvements in what was already a benchmark estate.
Guillaume’s appreciation for white wine propelled him to expand the domaine's white wine production; and after a life-changing meal in Paris with a bottle of Tissot Arbois Chardonnay, ultimately led him to the Jura. With his acquisition over the years, d’Angerville has secured exceptional parcels of Chardonnay that in Burgundy would easily be Premier Cru if not Grand Cru.
The white wines from Domaine Pelican showcase the quality and strides that d’Angerville and his long standing right hand Francois Duvivier are able to achieve. They are now equally masters of Chardonnay and Savagnin, much like they are with Pinot Noir. These are stellar wines that reach the highest heights in Jura Chardonnay. They speak of the place yet represent that Burgundian feel and sensibility. Perhaps that is why we love them so much. One thing is for sure, these are exceptional wines that represent quality, pedigree and character.
These are “showstoppers” as Antonio Galloni puts it. They are impactful wines in every possible way. The aromas leap from the glass, the textures are mesmerizing, and the raciness of the finish is prolonged and then some. These are wines that compete with the best of Burgundy qualitatively but thankfully not price wise, and are truly relative steals compared to Premier Cru Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet. Try wines with a few years of bottle age, and you can see clearly how these wines are aging slowly and just starting to hit their stride and become fully realized in the glass. They are absolutely delicious and vibrant in their youth but those that have tried the 2018s recently for instance, know now how high the quality and pedigree is at Domaine Pelican.
While Volnay most likely runs in Guillaume’s veins and will always be home - Domaine du Pelican is Guillaume’s passion and playground - giving us all some extraordinary wine to enjoy now and the years to come.
Cheers,
