Aged Brunello & Super-Tuscan
Since the 1890s one of the best!

Col d’Orcia is one of Montalcino’s great historic estates still in operation today. This magnificent property represents the epitome of the Tuscan countryside farm that produced everything from wine to olive oil, grains, and even beef. Today, Col d’Orcia is more than just a vineyard and winery, however, it is the Brunello (Sangiovese) that has clearly excelled in the last century.

Located in the southern border of Montalcino in Sant’Angelo in Colle, Col d’Orcia, one of the region’s largest landowners under vine, used to be part of a much larger estate that was divided into Col d’Orcia and Il Poggione in 1958. Col d’Orcia, founded by Stefano Franceschi, takes its name from the Orcia River that runs through the property. Of course the rich wine history of the property dates back to the 1890s but it is during the 1970s that Col d’Orcia really began to evolve into the iconic Montalcino wine estate that we know today.

With no heirs, Stefano Franceshi in the 1970s sold Col d’Orcia to the Cinzano family of Piedmont. It was during the Cinzano early years that the vineyards began to expand and extensive research ensued at the property in partnership with the Universita di Firenze. From clones of Sangiovese to rootstock and farming practices, the Cinzanos looked at everything.

Some thirty to forty years later we are now experiencing the benefits of all this work. The wines of Col d’Orcia have never been better. The depth of the wines is marvelous. They are traditionally produced and raised but are clean and transparent. The clone selection and work in the vineyards has made a dramatic difference. Since 2010 the entire property is 100% organic for all agricultural efforts and a pillar of example for the region.

The recent vintages at Col d’Orcia have been stellar and only improving. This venerable estate has been on a very serious roll since the 2013 Vintage. The classic Brunello have been well structured, refined and classically proportioned, showcasing depth, and longevity in the 2013, 2015, 2016 and more importantly in the 2017 vintage.

The 2017 Brunello is inspiring and a real homage to traditional Brunello di Montalcino that delivers the best of Sangiovese Grosso in Sant’Angelo in Colle for a mere fraction of the price of this estate’s historic peers. For those who prefer a bit more density and power, we are also excited to offer the single vineyard Poggio al Vento Riservas. A wine of exceptional quality and pedigree, the 2015 Poggio al Vento reaffirms the heights that Col d’Orcia is achieving.

Col d’Orcia is producing some very exciting and obtainable wines that we feel are worth every Brunello lover's attention. They will be rewarding for years and years to come.

Cheers,
Jeremy

PS… I almost forgot the Olmaia. O-My is it good! Cabernet in Montalcino that is pure savoriness and black currant fruit. Thick cut steaks on the grill with just rosemary, salt and pepper - talk about a perfect combination.
