Henschke’s Over 100 Year Old Shiraz Vines The Henschke family has been producing wine in Australia for over 155 years. Six generations of winemaking and grape growing means that the Henschke family are stewards of some of the finest vineyards in Australia and some of the oldest vines in the country. It was the Henschke longevity and dedication to the region that allowed Cyril Henschke in 1952 to begin producing a wine from Mount Edelstone and then ultimately purchase the vineyard in 1974. The 1952 Mount Edelstone was the first single vineyard wine produced at Henschke, six years before their famed Hill of Grace. Mount Edelstone is an own rooted vineyard that is dry farmed. Vines in Mount Edelstone can exceed 100 years of age, and as a result this vineyard’s yields are naturally low. Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace are both located in Keyneton along the Mt Lofty Ranges east of the Barossa Valley. The sandy loam over a bed of clay have proven to be the ideal location for Shiraz and is the reason why these vineyards were able to support vine age of over 100 years. Mount Edelstone in addition has more of a gravel base to the soil atop red-clay that sits above silstone. This rocky environment has a transformative impact on Mount Edelstone versus Hill of Grace. The tannin levels are refined and silky, the underlying earthy and savory elements of Mount Edelstone are more in the forefront of the wine and seamlessly integrated, giving a balance and feel that makes Mount Edelstone lean a tad more old-world. Mount Edelstone is one of Australia’s premier and prized Shiraz vineyards that continues to define the heights and quality of old-vine Shiraz. Cheers, |
