A Tuscan - Cheval Blanc / VCC
Tenuta Montebello’s Picconero is one of Tuscany’s finest expressions of a Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend. The hypothetical cross of the legendary estates of Pomerol and St. Emilion: Vieux Chateau Certan and Cheval Blanc.
Made by the Tolaini family, the 2016 Picconero captures the greatness of this landmark vintage for Tuscany’s Chianti zone. Widely regarded as the greatest overall vintage that Tuscany has enjoyed, the bounty of the 2016 vintage extends well beyond Sangiovese, producing Bordeaux-inspired wines of greatness.
Picconero is a full-bodied wine that is bold and silky at the same time. The Tuscan herb garden is wonderfully enveloped with dark plum and berry expressions that create a long and silky finish that turns minty and lead pencil-like as it persists. The power and grace of Merlot and Cabernet Franc are harmoniously blended here yet allowed to show their finest attribute equally. For as rich and decadent as this wine is on first pour, the finish quickly reveals the earthy and savory elements of Tuscany and these grapes.
This is a beautiful expression of Tuscany’s ability to produce world-class Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Very well done indeed.
Cheers,
