Who is the most compelling winemaker in Spain today?

Jorge Monzon, the founder/winemaker at Dominio del Aguila, in Ribera del Duero.

Dominio del Aguila has redefined Ribera del Duero and what it means to farm tempranillo in Spain. Monzon and his team are dedicated to organic agriculture, whole cluster, traditional methods including foot treading, long and slow fermentation in very cold cellars, and field blends. The results have been some of the most sought-after and reordered wines we have ever offered from Ribera del Duero.

Before acquiring a vast collection of old vines, Jorge Monzon studied under Aubert de Villaine at the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti which led him to become one of the winemakers at Vega Sicilia. Talk about some serious wine mentors! 

Now, Jorge captains his own estate, which is producing the most compelling wines in Ribera del Duero.

The fruit in his highly sought-after Reserva comes from 85 year-old vines on some of the highest elevation sites in Ribera del Duero. The wine is all about tension and balance between rich concentration and fresh acidity. The blend is primarily Tempranillo with a small amount of the native Bobal and Albillo. 

We cannot recommend these wines enough. This is an amazing opportunity to secure what are clearly Jorge’s finest wines to date and really hone in on what makes Dominio del Aguila so special and a unique style! 

The ready-to-drink fruit-forward Picaro 2018 is a sleeper of a wine! It is so powerful and concentrated that it just might outlive most other producers Ribera del Duero Reservas. It is a very serious wine with a complexity and nuance that only Monzon could achieve at this price point. 

The 2016 Reserva on the other hand is intellectually lively and classic structured. This wine is our most requested reordered Ribera del Duero in decades. The quality is marvelous, holding its own amongst Pingus and Vega Sicilia. It has taken us practically two years to secure more of the 2016 Reserva from the property. 

Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero are captivating and special wines. The depth, pedigree, and distinctive personality make these some of the most enjoyable and age-worthy examples of Tempranillo today. You cannot go wrong with any of the wines in the lineup.
