Fuller than its Liebenberg counterpart and faintly warm (though analytically harboring the same moderate (13.5%) alcohol) Alzinger?s 2012 Riesling Smaragd Hollerin reflects the deeper loess-overlain soils of this site. Apple and very ripe honeydew are tinged with mint cassis and huckleberry that lend subtly dark bitter shadings to a sustained finish. My suspicion is that we will be happier drinking this relatively young say by 2017.
