Another tour de force in the Comtes von Neipperg lineup 2019 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière reveals a dense purple/ruby color as well as complex full-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black currants tobacco forest floor and spicy floral nuances. Showing the vintage's ripe sexy yet also elegant style perfectly it has silky tannins a voluptuous layered mouthfeel plenty of tannins and a great finish. Drink this brilliant Saint-Emilion on release and over the following 20-30 years. Tasted twice. (Drink between 2020-2050)

Wine Advocate: 96 Points

The 2019 Canon la Gaffelière has turned out brilliantly bursting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of wild berries blood orange exotic spices rose petals violets and burning embers. Full-bodied ample and layered it's supple and perfumed with a deep core of lively fruit melting tannins and a long saline finish. This contains the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc of any of Stephan Von Neipperg's wines which no doubt helps to account for its singular personality. Located at the foot of the Saint-Émilion's southern slope Canon la Gaffelière's 20 hectares of vineyards are planted with some 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon the balance being Merlot. Farming is certified organic with thoughtful use of cover crops agroforestry initiatives unhedged canopies and late pruning. Macerations are long but gentle and new oak is increasingly chosen for discretion over impact. The result is wines of textural sensuality and striking aromatic range delivering all the fireworks that Cabernet Franc at full maturity can display. The 2019 has turned out brilliantly and will offer a broad drinking window.

Decanter: 95 Points

I love the balance on display here of powerful and softly whispering fruits a tightrope of acidity and tannins giving structure. Great stuff with the impact of 2018 but more freshness although still with the signature glamour of a Neipperg wine in full flight. (Drink between 2025-2044)

Vinous: 93-95 Points

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière is a nervous tightly wound wine. Then again we are talking about a Cabernet Franc-driven Saint-Émilion. Sweet red berries mint blood orange and spice pulse with tremendous energy. Aromatically expressive and deep Canon La Gaffelière builds effortlessly over time leading to a bright saline and mineral-drenched finish that is a thing of beauty. The 2019 shows much better from a full bottle (as opposed to a half) with silky tannins that emerge with a touch of aeration. I won't be surprised if the 2019 is even better from bottle than this note suggests.

Wine Spectator: 94 Points

Pepper bay and roasted tobacco notes give this a distinct persona out of the gate while sous bois and mulled plum black currant and black cherry fruit flavors fill in behind. Singed juniper and alder hints add form through the finish. Serious kudos for its range and character but may be a touch too old school for some folks. Merlot Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2038. ?J.M.
