Though luscious and saturated with blackberry black cherry and plum flavors this red is also dense and well-constructed with elements of chocolate and spice on the long finish. Fine harmony. Drink now through 2030. 1000 cases made 80 cases imported.
The 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Ruelles opens in the glass with notes of cassis plums smoked meats and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied layered and fleshy with fine depth and concentration bright acids and a flavorful finish it's a definite success. As I've written before at nearly 39 hectares the Devillard family's Château de Chamirey dominates Mercurey's geography. Happily the quality of these wines today makes them a more than worthy ambassador for the appellation. Managing such an extensive surface naturally presents challenges but régisseur Enrico Peyron is to be commended for the progress he has made in adapting a large cellar to operate on a small scale. Two harvest teams for example now operate independently: one charged with whites the other with reds. The 2018 vintage which I tasted in Beaune has turned out very nicely at this address delivering balanced elegant reds and charming expressive whites.
This broad-ranging nose is very ripe though not roasted or jammy with its cassis black cherry raspberry spice and earth scents. The highly seductive velvet-texture flavors possess better depth on the rustic powerful and serious finish. This mildly warm effort should reward extended cellaring. (Drink starting 2028)
