Decanter: 97 Points

There's a hint of petrol on the nose, reminiscent of Riesling, and high-toned florality too. While it's generous on the tongue, being full-bodied but not fat, it’s also more mineral, dry and austere compared to most Condrieu. With good length, it stays tight and tucked in on the finish. A touch of pink grapefruit, but this is a wine that's more about sensation and texture than aromatics, with great tension and freshness. Grapes were picked on 20th September. Wine Advocate: 96 Points

Reviewed by Joe Czerwinski Issue Date 19th Dec 2019 Source December 2019 Week 3 The Wine Advocate Paradoxically the 2016 Chateau Grillet seems more developed and yet fresher than the 2017. Caramel overtones frame notes of apricot and peach on the full-bodied silky-textured palate hung on a backbone of brine and citrus zest. Less opulent and flamboyant than the 2017 it could be described as more classic and it will probably age a bit longer. I was fortunate to have only one visit on the day I arrived in France?and to have it be at this legendary property. Purchased by the Pinault family in 2011 and managed by Frédéric Engerer (who also looks after the family's other viticultural interests?Château Latour Clos de Tart Domaine Eugenie Eisele Vineyard) the quality here is still on the upswing. Korean winemaker Jaeok Cramette arrived at the property in March of this year having moved down from Domaine Eugenie in the Côte de Nuits. She previously worked for an importer in South Korea but came to France in 2008 to pursue a winemaking degree and stayed in Burgundy afterward. Despite being a recent arrival she was conversant with all the vineyard plots saying of the property's four hectares "I feel like I'm doing gardening not viticulture." This minuscule estate recently added an adjacent parcel of Condrieu so going forward there will be three wines released each year.

Vinous: 95 Points

Translucent gold. A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe citrus and pit fruits violet candied fig and smoky minerals that show fine definition and spicy lift. Stains the palate with concentrated Meyer lemon nectarine melon and honeysuckle flavors that are supported by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Densely packed and powerful yet surprisingly lithe as well. Shows outstanding energy and resonating mineral and floral qualities on an impressively long sappy finish. (Drink between 2024-2033)
