Les Poyeux comes from a nearly 2-hectare plot of the same name, on a gentle slope with a clay and limestone soil mixed with windblown sands. A universally popular and feminine wine, with notes of vanilla and dry spices. - Clos Rougeard
I really love the size and shape of the 2009 vintage of les Poyeux from Clos Rougeard, but this wine is still a bit tight and will demand more bottle age before it starts to really hit on all cylinders. The bouquet is very pure and precise, wafting from the glass in a blend of red and black cherries, chalky soil tones, cigar smoke, juniper berries and a lovey base of smoky oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, young and classy, with a fine core of fruit, ripe, seamless tannins and superb length and grip on the poised, focused and beautifully balanced finish. This is a few years closer to truly blossoming than the 2010 Les Poyeux, and it should be just a hair superior when the two reach their apogees. Fine, fine juice in the making.
