One of the original estates in Montalcino, Col d’Orcia is a traditional estate at the forefront of sustainable wine production in Tuscany. Situated at the southern extremity of the Montalcino DOCG at about 300 meters altitude, the winery’s name means “Hill overlooking the Orcia River”, refering to its situation between the river and Sant’Angelo in Colle.

Col d’Orcia is a large estate, the third largest in Brunello. Notwithstanding its evident size, it is run with artisanal care by its owner, Count Francesco Marone Cinzano, whose father bought the estate in 1973 from the Franceschi family, who still own the neighboring Il Poggione site.

The estate’s most famous wine is a single vineyard Poggio al Vento – meaning “windy hill” which is an extraordinarily beautiful seven-hectare vineyard planted in 1974. Bottled as a Riserva, this wine is only made separately in the best years.  It is fermented in steel with a long maceration and subsequently aged in 25-75 Hectoliter Slavonian and Allier Botti for three years.

Vigna Nastagio – from a five hectare site in the upper part of the Orcia River basin with southwestern exposure – was planted in 2006 and is bottled as a cru with a more modern style. The wine ages in 500 L tonneau before being moved to botti for two years.

Fermentation of all the wines takes place in large, rather squat stainless steel fermenters, which allows for greater degree of skin contact. All the Brunellos – other than the Vigna Nastagio - then age 3 years in larger Savonian oak.

Vinous: 96+ Points

The darkly alluring 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento requires coaxing to unlock its aromatics from their youthful state. However patience is rewarded as crushed stones and ashen earth give way to red and black wild berries offset by hints of camphor and finally a note of sweet tobacco. Its textures are like pure silk draped across the palate as a saturation of salty minerals settle in. Vivid notes of tart black cherry and an air of inner rose resonate throughout as fine tannins slowly clench the senses. The result is one of hulking structure yet also a potent staining of primary concentration; yet through it all bright acids maintain supreme balance. Wow the 2015 Poggio al Vento is a masterpiece in the making. Eric Guido. Tasting date: March 2022

Wine Advocate: 95 Points

Made with certified organic fruit the Col d'Orcia 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is open-knit and big both in intensity and mouthfeel. This full-bodied Riserva graces us with budding tertiary notes of tobacco and cured leather but the ripe and fundamentally very rich fruit of this vintage remains firm at its core. You also get cola licorice and grilled rosemary. This vineyard site sees ancient soils with an important component of well-draining sand and this helps to concentrate flavors. The wine's fruit weight is large-scale for sure and it's more than enough to soften the 15% alcohol in this 25000-bottle release. A food pairing will require a wintery scene a roaring fireplace and an important cut of beef.
