Discreet nuances of spice earth and animale add interest to the broad-ranging nose of plum and floral aromas. There is outstanding richness and power to the strikingly dense and muscular big-bodied flavors that possess a velvety mid-palate that contrasts noticeably with the very serious and built-to-age finale that delivers superb length. This may drink well for a few years once it's bottled but I suspect that it will subsequently shut down so buy this with the intent of cellaring it for the longer-term because it's going to need it.
vGood dark red with ruby tones. Superripe liqueur-like aromas of dark fruits minerals dried flowers and brown spices. Dense sappy and thick but with an element of tautness provided by the wine's underlying minerality. A large-scaled Clos de la Roche in the style of the vintage offering lightly saline flavors of currant brown spices roast coffee and underbrush. Finishes with a juicy spicy whiplash of flavor and palate-staining length. A more roasted and less floral style than its 2016 sibling but there's enough energy here to support a slow evolution in bottle. -Stephen Tanzer
