(The Withers Winery Mr. Burgess Red Wine Sierra Foothills) (a 90/10 blend of syrah and mourvedre; all of these Withers Winery releases say 14.1% alcohol on the label): Good medium-deep red. Purple berries licorice and sweet oak on the nose. Sappy saline and serious showing a slightly medicinal cast to the flavors of black raspberry menthol and minerals. Not yet pliant but this very young wine has the structure and supporting minerality--and extract--to evolve gracefully. The tannins are ultimately round. This very promising set of wines comes from a joint venture between collector Andrew Tow and David Low co-founder and winemaker of Anthill Farms. The wines all come from high-elevation vineyards in cool sites.
