Wine Advocate: 94 Points

A brilliant effort the 2020 Santenay 1er Cru Gravières Rouge unfurls in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with exotic spices roses and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied supple and perfumed it's deep and concentrated its ripe structuring tannins almost entirely concealed in a perfumed core of fruit. In the August 2021 Week 2 Issue of The Wine Advocate I devoted a feature to the wines and work of Jean-Marc Vincent so I direct readers to that piece rather than attempt to reprise all its minutiae here. As I wrote in that piece my first look at Vincent's 2020s from barrel in Summer 2021 convinced me that this is his finest vintage to date?and by some margin in the case of several cuvées?and when I returned to formally review them in November those early impressions were if anything strengthened. These wines set a new benchmark for Santenay and I couldn't recommend them more warmly. Published: Jan 31 2023 The 2020 Santenay 1er Cru Gravières Rouge is a magical wine in the making unfurling in the glass with aromas of plums and wild berries mingled with hints of rose petals rich spices and deep soil tones. Medium to full-bodied concentrated and multidimensional it's velvety and vibrant with beautifully refined tannins terrific generosity of fruit and lively balancing acids. Like its white counterpart this sets a new standard for Santenay.

The 2020 Santenay Les Gravières 1er Cru shows just a little reduction on the nose, though there is plenty of coiled-up fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with very fine tannins, flavors of black cherries and bilberry, and a touch of black olive toward the finish. This is

One barrel from a plot within Gravières, planted at 17,000 vines per hectare and surrounded by murgers. Just the same colour, with more flesh and a little oak on the nose. Plenty to follow here. Some biscuit, loads of flesh, a wine which is going to need time to come together. Everything is there! So much more texture than other white Santenays that I know.
