Wine Advocate: 96 Points

From the southeast-facing part of the cru the 2019 Ried Kellerberg Dürnsteiner Riesling Smaragd opens with a deep pure intense and complex nose with perfectly ripe slightly caramelized fruit intertwined with finely mineral and herbal notes. Full-bodied and intense yet crystalline on the palate this is a rich but refined and elegant very mineral fresh piquant and nuanced Riesling of great class and style. A wine to keep for at last another 5-6 years. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021. Everything looked great until mid-August 2020 but then there was the hail on August 22 which only grazed Loiben but was devastating in Spitz. "Some of our grapes were only slightly damaged" reports Emmy Knoll. After that it was dry at first but due to warm and humid weather in September there was a lot of rot pressure which meant a costly and lossy harvest. "This was quite tragic because the initial situation with us was actually super. We had aromatic grapes because the year was not as hot and dry as 2019 or even 2018 but the bigger the harvest team was and the more skilled the better it was at sorting. In the end we did have great material and the wines turned out very nicely aromatic just the way you want them to be." So far however I have hardly tasted any 2020 wines from Knoll as that was reserved for a later then cancelled trip. I hope to be able to pass the tops from 2020 soon but for now it should anyway apply to still stock up with the great 2019s. The Vinotheksfüllung of the Loibner Grüner Veltliner is sensational and so is the corresponding Riesling and also the 2019 Riesling Ried Schütt. In 20 years I have never tasted a better collection than Knolls 2019s. Thus it won't be easy for the 2020s...
