Pinot Noir Champagne Extra-Brut
Champagne Philipponnat New Heights

Champagne Philipponnat is one of the great estates of Champagne with key vineyards in the Montagne de Reims throughout: Mareuil-sur-Ay, Ay, Mailly and Verzy. The most famous is of course, Glos des Goisses, whose power and longevity is legendary.

In recent years, Philipponnat under the direction of Charles Philipponnat has enjoyed a repositioning back to quality over quantity. The Champagnes at Philipponnat are desirable and collectible well beyond Clos des Goisses.

The creation of the Cuvee 1522 is the sum of this quality marker, creating a wine of the vintage that represents the best of the house per year. Based on prime parcels across several vineyards, Cuvee 1522 is deeply rooted in Ay, which is where the family first started producing Champagne. The Le Leon vineyards serve as the base of Cuvee 1522, lending its powerful and complex Pinot Noir to the blend. With the Cuvee 1522 Rose, additional vineyards from Mailly and Verzy are added to the blend with the final component coming from Clos des Goisses as the addition of still Pinot Noir. The Rose is a powerhouse explosion of Pinot Noir that harnesses the depth and character of Montagne de Reims primary villages. The addition of 17% Chardonnay from Verzy lends a brightness and lift to the wine, but complements the richness and power of the terroir.

This is a Champagne lover's Rose. Balanced perfectly between fruit and richness, the mineral depth and nuances are a myriad of layers that unfold with time in the glass. Bottled as an Extra-Brut, there is no sweetness to be concerned with but rather it is an interesting balance between the power and tautness of the wine that is achieved.

Cheers,
