Insignia First Before Opus & Dominus
As one of the early defining voices of Napa Valley wine production in the 1970s Joseph Phelps was as influential as Robert Mondavi and Beaulieu Vineyards. At that time, Napa Valley was focused more on producing and promoting single grape wines and much less focused on the blend. Joseph Phelps, looking at his European inspiration set forth from the beginning to make the finest expression of Napa Valley per harvest blending his best grapes from the best vineyards across the valley. In only his second harvest, Insignia was born in 1974. Widely recognized as the first true Bordeaux inspired blend post Prohibition, Insignia paved the way for Opus One, Dominus and the sea of modern-day Cabernet Blends that now exist today. Insignia’s rich history includes numerous perfect scores and near perfect scores from a vast array of professional wine critics and publications. The 2002 vintage was declared Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2005. Today, Insignia is as fine as ever. The mastery of the art of the blend is what keeps Insignia one of the most compelling and unique wines of Napa Valley. Cheers, |
