Aurelien Laherte is producing some of the finest Champagne of our time, and yet, his rising star is still not on the mainstream.
At any moment they will be. Laherte has taken his family’s exceptional Champagne House and polished it into the shiniest jewel of the region. Located in Chavot, this sub-region referred to as Coteaux Sud d’Epernay is the connection between the famed Cotes de Blancs, Epernay and the Vallee de la Marne.
Here Laherte farms a collection of vineyards that is diverse and uniquely composed of the best attributes of Champagne. From chalky soil sites to rich and powerful clay, Laherte is lucky to have a diverse canvas of vineyards and vines to work with. That is why when Aurelien assumed control of the farming and winemaking he made the decision to begin to separate out parcels and produce a collection of single vineyard wines like we have never seen before in Chavot.
While Aurelien’s expressions of Meunier and the forgotten grapes of Champagne might be what first captures people's attention it is the Les Grandes Crayeres that keeps bringing us back time and time again.
Laherte Les Grandes Crayeres is a pure expression of Chardonnay from two chalk based vineyard sites in Chavot. It is a wine of power and precision that has captured our attention since the 2014 release, becoming one of our most requested Champagne the past two years.
This is one of our favorite releases each year and rapidly became our most anticipated.
The 2016 Les Grandes Crayeres is absolutely marvelous, cut from the same stone as the 2014 vintage that first grabbed us, the 2016 Crayeres has an energy and vibrancy that Antonio Galloni calls “stunning in every way.”
Cheers,
