Pierre and Marie Duroche have taken Pierre’s family estate, Domaine Duroche, from France’s insider value Burgundy to global super-star must have everyday Burgundy!
Duroche burst onto the global stage with the 2012 vintage. In practically an overnight boom, Duroche went from obscurity to the talk of the town.
The boom is the result of Pierre taking full control of the domaine in 2009, after joining his father in the 2005 vintage. Those crucial 7 vintages gave Pierre the time to study the families significant holdings in village Gevrey-Chambertin, allowing him to identify the parcels that are better suited for blending versus single expression. The result was a shift at Duroche focusing on highlighting the estate's old-vines and vast expressions of terroir.
By separating several of the single vineyard village wines out on their own, Pierre was able to dramatically change the expression of the Duroche Gevrey-Chambertin village. By being more selective in the parcels going into the blended cuvee, Duroche did not weaken the blend but rather fortified it. Here the wine is a sum of its parts, where less is more. His father’s take blended more parcels together that unfortunately drowned out the character and charm of these exceptional vineyards. Simply put, just too many personalities at one time.
Today, the Duroche Gevrey village is focused, delicious, and pure. It is a wine of exceptional value, purity, and overall expression of Gevrey-Chambertin. This will not be a wine of heft or brawn from Gevrey, rather, if you are looking for singular elegance and exquisite energy, look no further.
It is no surprise when looking at consumer sharing sites, Cellar Tracker, Delectable and Vivino, to see that consumers overwhelmingly consistently rate the Duroche Gevrey village high and a great value. This is one of those wines, where the consumer opinions outway those of the professional critics.
The sum, consumers agree - Duroche delivers!
Cheers,
Jeremy
