Falstaff: 100 Points

Bright, radiant golden yellow with silver reflections and a very fine, lively mousse. The bouquet opens with white flowers, ripe apple and lime zest. Underneath, there is some light nougat and herbs, a touch of kumquat; with more air contact comes notes of tropical fruit and Krug-typical bitter orange; a touch of dried porcini and trompette de la mort mushroom aromas form the background. Compact, with a juicy palate, hints of white peach and delicate marzipan heightened by citrus nuances, the wine has a finessed acidity. It is mineral on the finish, underpinned by red currants, and is surprisingly youthful and lively overall. It is a highly elegant, individualistic Champagne with excellent ageing potential. Krug?s 2006 Clos d?Ambonnay is superb. It offers a beguiling interplay of richness from the warm solar year and strong mineral underpinnings that wrap it all together. Hints of apricot plum baked apple tart and spice soar out of the glass. Soft curvy and exceptionally well-balanced the 2006 is the most sensual young Clos d?Ambonnay I have tasted. This is a magnificent showing from Krug. That?s pretty much all there is to it. Best of all the 2006 is a rare Clos d?Ambonnay that can be enjoyed upon release. Harvest took place over two days and wrapped up on September 22 considered late at the time. (Drink between 2023-2036)

Entirely crafted from Pinot Noir sourced in a single parcel of Clos d'Ambonnay Krug's 2006 Blanc de Noirs Brut Clos d?Ambonnay is one of my favorite vintages at this address. Evoking aromas of spices smoke white fruits brioche pastry dried herbs plum and ripe orchard fruits it possesses a full-bodied round and charming mid-palate framed by a crystalline and pure texture. It has a delicately phenolic mid-palate and pinpoint mousse that leads to a long mineral and saline finish marked by subtle iodine notes and gastronomic bitterness. Classic and precise this is purity and elegance incarnate. Though already superb readers should be patient to enjoy this Champagne at its peak. When I met Julie Cavil Krug?s Chef de Caves in July the extensive construction at Joseph?the name the house has given to the new winery in the heart of Ambonnay?was nearing completion. During the visit I had the opportunity to taste the latest rendition of the cuvée the 172ème Edition based on the 2016 vintage alongside some of the oldest cuvées and the newly released Clos d?Ambonnay from the 2008 vintage. Clos d'Ambonnay from the 2006 vintage is drinking beautifully now flexing its muscles by combining comforting aromas of Porcini mushroom sweet hay rice and toasted buckwheat with the laser force of lemony acidity lemon jam and salty seaweed. Hugely powerful driving across the palate with energy and a waft of sea breeze. Only 4514 bottles and 800 magnums of 2006 were made and this is only the sixth release since 1995. Harvest of the Clos d'Ambonnay vineyard was on 21 September that year. (Drink between 2024-2040)
