Based on 91% Syrah 6% Mourvèdre and the rest Viognier fermented with 40% stems all raised 22 months in 60% new French the inky colored 2016 No 5 gives up a gorgeous bouquet of blackcurrants olives scorched earth camphor and ground pepper. Deep rich incredibly powerful yet also pure balanced and seamless with good acidity it builds on the palate has no hard edges and delivers a blockbuster finish. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades.
jdBlended of 91% Syrah 6% Mourvedre and 3% Viognier and using 40% whole cluster the Andremily 2016 No. 5 is sourced from White Hawk Larner Harrison-Clarke Watch Hill and Alta Mesa Vineyards. It spent 22 months in French oak barriques 60% new. Deep garnet-purple colored it charges out of the glass with gregarious blackberry preserves blueberry pie licorice raisin cake and tree bark notes plus touches of cracked black pepper and smoked meats. Full-bodied rich and beautifully textural with firm velvety tannins it has loads of spice sparked with black fruit preserves flavors a lively line and long plush-coated finish. 710 cases and a few magnums were produced. In May 2019 I paid a visit to Andremily owner Jim Binns at his small winemaking facility in Ventura CA. A former employee at Sine Qua Non not only did this guy learn from the best he has taken the baton and run off into his own very clever direction with it. I think it is safe to say that with the possible exception of Beaucastel?s Hommage a Jacques Perrin there is no one in the world producing greater Mourvedre than Jim. It is a variety that he clearly loves and has mastered like no other. Most impressive is the quality of the tannins in his varietal label (85%+ Mourvedre)?astonishing when you consider how difficult it can be to get Mourvedre tannins this ripe! A new addition to the lineup is the 2017 Coup de Foudre. During our tasting of this wine Jim commented ?I allowed this to form from what I envisioned my best Rhone blend could be. All these Rhone varieties blend so well together?I thought it would be great to try to work on a top blend.?
