Bedrock wine company was started in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Petersen, the son of Joel Petersen who had established Ravenswood. Working initially out of a garage with outdoor fermenters and subsequently borrowing space in a friend’s winery Morgan set about making wines to preserve and rehabilitate old vineyards in California. Although many of these oldest vineyards were planted to Zinfandel, they were also planted to other grape varieties by immigrants in the early twentieth century – such as Syrah, Bouchet, Alicante, Grenache, Semillon, Pinot Gris and Riesling. The sources of this fruit can range from established locations such as Oakville in Napa to less familiar sites in Mendocino or Lodi, Amador or Contra Costa as well as distant corners of Sonoma.
The wines produced are not the same each year. There is a hope at Bedrock always to find something new, provided the resulting wine reflects its origins under the California sun and is simply delicious. The focus is always on ideal ripeness of fruit while making wines of freshness with strong aromatic profiles.
Connected to this is the view that a simple approach in the cellar lends itself to creating this type of wine. No commercial yeasts are used, the reds see some whole cluster, malolactic fermentation is unforced, oak is only used I fit is the very best and absolutely and nothing unnecessary is added.
Morgan was joined in 2013 by Chris Cottrell.
In 2017 Morgan became a Master of Wine.
The 2023 Old Hill Heritage Wine soars from the glass with lifted aromatics. Bright red-toned fruit spice mint blood orange cinnamon cedar and new leather are all beautifully sculpted in this nuanced captivating red blend. This field blend of more than varieties is so aromatically intense. Painstakingly tended to by the Bucklin family Old Hill is quite simply one of the most pedigreed vineyard sites in the United States. What a gorgeous wine this is. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2025 Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell presented a stellar collection of 2023s. With one exception the wines are brilliant from top to bottom. Some of the highlights include a stunning new Cabernet Franc from the Detert estate in Oakville. The Franc is made from the famed East Block fruit that had previously been under contract to Mondavi for several decades. Tasted from barrel the young 2023 is incredibly promising. The Oakville Farmhouse is also memorable. A bevy of Heritage Wines from sites in Sonoma County are not too far behind. This year?s lineup concludes with three Syrahs from Hudson each done with a slightly different style of vinification and aging. The one wine that is disappointing is the 2023 Syrah (California). It?s an instructive wine that illustrates what happens when cold-climate sites struggle to fully ripen in a cold year. That wine aside this range is packed with captivating reds that I would love to own and drink.
