Burlotto?s 2013 Barolo Cannubi is a showstopper. Literally. Conversation stops as attendees taste the 2013. This is what top-flight Barolo is all about. In 2013 the Monvigliero has gotten most of the attention and for good reason. It is a truly monumental wine. But the Cannubi is not that far behind. On this night it is positively dazzling and every bit as profound as it has always been. The Cannubi has really soared in recent years as proprietor Fabio Alessandria has brought it inline stylistically with his other wines. - By Antonio Galloni on November 2017 The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is suave silky and polished to the core. Dark red cherry plum smoke licorice lavender and wild flowers abound in a deep pliant wine endowed with class and purity. Slightly darker bluish hues typical of cooler years are front and center. Generous and supple with striking underlying structure and expressive floral notes the Cannubi is a total knock-out. - By Antonio Galloni on November 2016 These are quite simply the finest wines I have ever tasted from Burlotto. Over the last decade or so proprietor Fabio Alessandria has stepped up quality in a meaningful way. The various entry-level wines are now consistently terrific while the Cannubi Barolo is now stylistically inline with the other Barolos. Although it is not the most expensive Barolo in the range (the Cannubi has that distinction for historical reasons) the Monvigliero is in my view the flagship. That wine is off the charts in 2013. The challenge with the Monvigliero has always been avoiding excessive vegetal notes from the whole clusters. The 2013 is the first young Burlotto Monvigliero I have tasted where the balance is right on the money from the very beginning. Readers should not miss these extraordinary traditionally made Barolos.
