The new release of Jean-Marc Sélèque’s “Solessence” non-vintage Extra Brut is from the base year of 2021. It is crafted from its customary cépages of fifty percent chardonnay, forty percent pinot meunier and ten percent pinot noir, with the pinot meunier component showing particularly well in this latest iteration. It was disgorged in October of 2023 and finished with a dosage of two grams per liter. The wine delivers lovely aromatics in its constellation of apple, white peach, chalky minerality, brioche, raw almond and a topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is pure, precise and full-bodied, with lovely depth of fruit at the core, refined soil inflection, elegant mousse and impeccable balance on the long, crisp and complex finish. This is a first class non-vintage bottling that is drinking quite nicely out of the blocks, but clearly will be even better with some bottle age. (Drink between 2024-2050)

The NV Extra Brut Solessence is a blend of 50% Chardonnay 40% Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir half based on 2020 half on a perpetual reserve. It is immediately rich and rounded with mellow apple and apple crumble notes with a lemon zest overtone. The palate is just as mellow with the milder acidity of 2020 but layered complexity and saltiness from the perpetual reserve. This is fresh bright vivid with still youthful mousse but the mid-palate packs quite a punch. Lovely depth for a relatively short-aged wine. The low dosage is well pitched to highlight lemon and salt rather than roundness. The finish shines with some umami and the freshness form the reserve wines. Dosage is 2gr/L. Disgorged: December 2022. - Anne Krebiehl MW (Drink between 2023-2030)
