Terrazas de los Andes Description

Crisp, herbal and fruity, this surprising, Extremo Malbec wine wonderfully encapsulates the fresh magic of the Andes.El Espinillo Vineyard is located in the Gualtallary GI in Tupungato, Uco Valley, at 1650 meters above sea level, making it the highest productive vineyard in the area. Situated entirely in Las Tunas river alluvial fan, El Espinillo features sandy loam soils with the presence of medium to small-sized rocks covered with calcareous. This vineyard is characterized by extremely low average temperatures with marked variations due to the pronounced slope of the terrain. This parcel was chosen for its ability to represent our most emblematic grape variety, achieving a unique freshness, great aromatic expression, and a distinctive varietal character.

James Suckling: 98 Points

Intense aromas of spices grape skin and orange peel with fresh spearmint and other herbs. Medium-bodied with a dense center palate of chewy tannins and juicy and citrusy undertones. Crunchy and chewy at the same time. It?ll get a July 2024 launch in the market. Fermented with 15% whole clusters. Partial aging in amphorae and casks. The first vintage of this wine is from plot No. 1 of the El Espinillo Vineyard at 1650 meters. A high-altitude wine through and through with polished and precision. Hard not to drink now.

Sourced from the El Espinillo vineyard (the highest-elevation vineyard in the Uco Valley) the 2021 Malbec Extremo underwent 12 months of barrel-aging: 40% in second-use barrels 30% in new barrels and 30% in clay amphorae. It displays floral aromas of violet and lavender enhanced by notes of jarilla thyme and rosemary from the surrounding wild landscape. It is elegant and silky on the palate featuring fine reactive tannins that lead to a long fresh finish. The refreshing slightly tense texture gives it a distinctive quality. This Malbec has a character more akin to Pinot Noir than any other Malbec in the Valley?truly a game-changer. - By Joaquín Hidalgo on November 2024

A new bottling from Terrazas de Los Ándes the 2021 Extremo Malbec comes from the El Espinillo Vineyard the highest vineyard in Gualtallary at 1650 meters in altitude. It fermented in oak foudre with 15% whole clusters and matured for 12 months in first- and second-use barrique as well as clay amphora. It stands out as the clear centerpiece of the lineup leading with a gorgeous detailed and focused bouquet that combines fresh herbs crushed stone gravel dust and mixed red and black fruit aromas. The palate is lush elegant and refined gradually flowing into a concentrated yet contained finish that expands in dimension with aeration revealing a persistent mineral-inflected drive. I found this notably more transparent than many of the treatment-focused wines in Terrazas's lineup. Published: May 01 2025
