The Val di Suga, a winery situated to the north of Montalcino, began making wine in the early 1980s. A wine called Vigna del Lago was first made in 1983 from a northeast-facing vineyard beside the lake opposite the winery. In 1988 the winery purchased a particularly well-situated site called Spuntali southwest of town and this was followed in 1999 with the acquisition of the Poggio al Granchio vineyard, which is in the southeast. The varied exposition of these three sites around the town gives Val di Suga vineyards with three different aspects, allowing for a blended Brunello which is made up of fruit from the three distinct localities. In addition to the blended Brunello and the three individual crus, a Rosso is made and also a Riserva. The estate totals 55 hectares under vine.
Fermentations are long – with about 20 days post fermentation maceration on the skins. Aging of the Brunellos is in large French oak barrels for 24 months, followed by six months in concrete vats.
The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio has a luxurious nose of rhubarb fresh strawberry with stems attached and sandalwood. Finely-tuned on the palate it's showing elegance and intensity with a rich core of concentrated fruit accented with white pepper and smoky mineral on the long and nuanced finish. Fresh and smooth this lovely red has aromas of violet camphor forest floor and dark-skinned berry. It?s full-bodied delicious and elegantly structured with flavors of mature Marasca cherry wild raspberry cake spice and star anise enveloped in velvety tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced while an iron mineral note gives it a tangy finish. 2028?2038.Abv: 14.5% Kerin O?Keefe January 2025 ©kerinokeefe.com
One of three separate cru bottlings Poggio al Granchio hails from Montalcino?s southeastern flank. The steep site sits on schisty Galestro soil and is surrounded by holm oak trees. Powerfully fragrant the 2020 expands with liquorice bay laurel eucalyptus and warm wet stone. Bringing in notes of iron the palate is well saturated with dark blue plum concentrated through the core girdled by gravelly tactile tannins. Full and virile this has clearly defined boundaries and salivating acidity with a tingly energetic finish. (Drink between 2026-2037)
The Val di Suga 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio offers dark fruit aromas that are generous and fleshed out in this warm vintage. The bouquet has a few high notes as well with spice tobacco and crushed stone that give upward lift. It's an all-encompassing Brunello that hits both your sense of smell and taste with an attractive level of intensity and focus. Production is 9000 bottles. Val di Suga has farmed three distinct vineyard sites since 1983 and is one of only a handful of producers in the region that offers single-vineyard selections each with a consistent territory-driven identity. The three excellent sites are Vigna del Lago in the northeastern part of the appellation with clay soils; Poggio al Granchio with galestro soils at a high 380 to 450 meters above sea level; and Vigna Spuntali in the southwest corner of the appellation on sandy soils. Wines made from this last site are held back for an extra year of aging. Published: Nov 21 2024
