Declared a California historic monument in 1957, Schramsberg is one of the United States’ most historic wineries. Founded in 1862, Schramsberg not only survived Prohibition but is also responsible for a litany of “firsts” in the USA.
Founder J. Schram had the foresight to dig a cave / cellar in the hillside of Diamond Mountain to produce and most importantly age the wines of his property. This laid the foundation for Jack and Jamie Davies who acquired the property in 1965 and immediately went all-in on producing California’s greatest sparkling wine.
While technically not Champagne, and legally not permitted to be called Champagne, Schramsberg is by all accounts America’s finest Champagne.
The Davies’ care and attention to detail brought about the finest sparkling wines outside of Champagne. Schramsberg broke barriers and norms: pioneering vintage sparkling wines, vintage Blanc de Noir, and the creation of a Reserve wine aged on the lees before disgorging.
The quality of Schramsberg is so compelling, making it the first American wine ever served at the White House for a state dinner in 1972. Today, Schramsberg is a staple of the Presidential wine cellars, rightfully so.
The Schramsberg Reserve 2008 is the epitome of Schramsberg. Since the first vintage in 1975, Schramsberg Reserve has been the truest, most age worthy comparison to Champagne. Currently, the Schramsberg winery is just releasing the 2011 vintage, making our stocks of 2008 ideal for drinking now. Acquired direct from the winery two years ago, we were enamored with the 2008 Reserve. Dominated by Pinot Noir, a staple and hallmark of Schramsberg, the 2008 Reserve is a powerful and complex wine that quenches the most discerning palates.
