James Suckling: 95 Points

Very floral on the nose with plums rose petals and freshly sliced porcini mushrooms. The palate is tight and compressed with beautiful ripe fruit wet earth and cool stone flavors. A structured and impressive wine. Drink after 2022.

Reviewed by Monica Larner Issue Date 31st Jan 2020 Source End of January 2020 The Wine Advocate This is a terrific wine and one of the new releases from Montalcino that I happily include on a short list of top recommendations. The Argiano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very lively bouquet that is already singing despite the young age of this new release. The wine opens to a dark ruby color with garnet highlights. The bouquet shows a large span of wild berry earth licorice spice and medicinal herb aromas. This vintage also reveals a pretty floral character with dried rose potpourri and lavender buds. After fermentation the wine is aged slowly for 30 months in large oak botte (including 10- 30- and 50-hectoliter capacity) thus restricting oxygen and gently slowing its evolution. However the 2015 vintage is naturally expressive and exuberant and that's the main takeaway here. Some 100000 bottles were filled in May 2019 and the wine hits the market in February 2020. There's a lot of exciting news to report from Argiano starting with the happy conclusion of a massive restoration and remodeling effort to the cypress-framed villa that stands on the crest of this stunning property as well as to its historic underground wine vaults. Those ancient cellars will now be used to age Argiano's most important bottles. This property has a famously well-stocked cellar with more than 3000 bottles including prized vintages from Bordeaux and a retrospective of Chateau d'Yquem that starts with the 1927 vintage. The main water well has been restored into a vertical wine cellar and there is a corner dedicated to the signature wines of the late consultant Giacomo Tachis who worked at Argiano for many years. General Manager Bernardino Sani says that the ideal growing conditions in 2015 led to the first official 100%-organic vintage at the estate. Argiano is positioned between 280 and 300 meters above sea level. The best Sangiovese vineyards are planted on the northern side of the property where mixed soils and a protective growing environment help to preserve the structure and freshness of the wines.

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

Focused cherry and plum flavors mark this rich red, with a hint of orange peel. Flashes of earth, leather and iron lend complexity, while the firm structure adds grip. Exhibits fine balance and length. Given the fruit, this should be approachable soon. Best from 2022 through 2037.

Vinous: 90 Points

Bright red. Nuanced aromas of red berries flowers and herbs plus a hint of iron. Flinty in the mouth too with a loamy element further complicating red cherry and berry flavors. Closes with nice persistence and repeating floral flavors.
