Tasting in the cellar I wrote ?Wine from another planet?; this is truly spectacular and worthy of notice ? super-ripe plummy fruit with an undercurrent of ground coffee smoke and spice on the nose. The texture is substantial and dense with firm tannins and exceptional length. Despite the vintage this has the proportions to age for decades. It originates from the superb 1.64ha parcel the domaine owns on the Morey-St-Denis side of the appellation. This terroir gives a more substantial structured version of Bonnes-Mares while the Chambolle side gives a bit more finesse. Not to be missed.

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a fragrant nose a mixture of red and blue fruit well-defined and focused. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins layers of red and black fruit a little reduction from the lees at the moment that will protect the freshness and allow them to add less SO2. Very persistent on the finish. Excellent. (Drink between 2025-2045)

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has also turned out very well mingling notes of sweet red berries and cherries with hints of rose petals and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied ample and layered it's pure and precise with a bright spine of acidity and a more tensile mineral profile than the richer fleshier Clos de Bèze. I'd heard murmurings of a renaissance at Domaine Bruno Clair for some time so this year I made a point of visiting. Evolution has indeed been underway: farming is now very close to organic across the 24-hectare estate; yields are being limited more strictly in the younger parcels; cover crops are the order of the day with the frequency of cultivation reduced; trees are being incorporated within all new plantings; and now in the winery whole clusters are being systematically retained in significant percentages and the frequency of punching down reduced. What are the results? The pure-fruited style of the domaine which doesn't push ripeness or percentages of new oak remains very much intact but even in 2021 more intensity of flavor and more expressive fruit already appears to be apparent. This was a very pretty set of wines and I look forward to following vintages to come. Published: Jan 31 2023

A crimson colour. The Bonnes Mares went through its malolactic fermentation early (in January) which makes the bouquet softer and more open. But this wine is generous gregarious and very classic in its wilder shores of Chambolle fashion. Wonderfully sensual then a touch more structure to bring up the finish correctly. Drink from 2028-2036.
