Glowing mid purple. A very gorgeous bouquet brilliant purity has been like this all the way through. Not looking for descriptive words here this is immaculate and has retained delicacy. Very long very fine with some rose petals at the finish. Delicacy with tensile strength. No sign of a second-class vintage here! Drink from 2028-2038.

Vinous: 93-95 Points

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a tight-fisted and recalcitrant bouquet quite tertiary white pepper notes emanate from the 40% whole bunches. The palate is medium-bodied with chiselled tannins fresh and tensile with wild strawberry marmalade and crushed stone notes on the finish. Bon vin. (Drink between 2026-2045)

Decanter: 94 Points

Bruno Clair explains the supremely delicious nature of his '21 Clos St-Jacques: 'For truly great wines there are no bad years.' This wine shows a lovely bright cherry fruit aroma with hints of rose petals crisp refreshing acidity and firm-ish tannins. The grapes come from the domaine?s hectare from the Clos; one-third are fermented as whole clusters and the wine is ageing now in cask (40% new). This should open at an early age but will easily bear at least mid-term ageing. (Drink between 2025-2045)

Wine Advocate: 92-94 Points

Pure and complete the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques exhibits aromas of sweet red berries potpourri blood orange spices and vine smoke followed by a medium to full-bodied seamless and fleshy palate its deep core of fruit framed by sweet velvety tannins. This shows terrific potential. I'd heard murmurings of a renaissance at Domaine Bruno Clair for some time so this year I made a point of visiting. Evolution has indeed been underway: farming is now very close to organic across the 24-hectare estate; yields are being limited more strictly in the younger parcels; cover crops are the order of the day with the frequency of cultivation reduced; trees are being incorporated within all new plantings; and now in the winery whole clusters are being systematically retained in significant percentages and the frequency of punching down reduced. What are the results? The pure-fruited style of the domaine which doesn't push ripeness or percentages of new oak remains very much intact but even in 2021 more intensity of flavor and more expressive fruit already appears to be apparent. This was a very pretty set of wines and I look forward to following vintages to come. Published: Jan 31 2023
