Wine Advocate: 95 Points

The 2021 Pinot Noir Terraces has deep aromas of pomegranate liqueur Italian plum blood orange iron mushrooms and mossy bark. The medium-bodied palate derives power from a surprisingly concentrated core of spicy dark fruit. It has abundant powdery tannins vibrant acidity and a long finish with a flourish of earth and bitters accents. 595 cases were made. Published: Jan 31 2024

Vinous: 95 Points

The 2021 Pinot Noir Terraces emerges from three tiny parcels with soils heavy in clay planted with a number of clones. Dark red/purplish fruit lavender rose petal mint and blood orange are some of the many notes that infuse the Terraces with striking textural depth. There's a fair amount of whole clusters in the 2021 (60%) but the stems are nicely balanced. I very much admire the density here. - By Antonio Galloni on July 2023 Chad Melville turned out a gorgeous set of wines in 2021. The top bottlings in particular are deeply impressive. As always the house style in the reds is defined by a considerable amount of stems along with aging in neutral oak. It?s an interesting combination that works well here. Even with a high percentage of whole clusters the wines are remarkably expressive of their micro-sites. Melville recently acquired the Chapel vineyard which is the site that started Ron Melville?s obsession with the Sta. Rita Hills many years ago. It will be interesting to see what Melville does with this fruit. Personally I would like to see a single vineyard Chardonnay at the very least.

Dark intense and juicy aromas of black raspberry black cherry violet and black pepper fire up the amazing nose of this bottling. The palate is vibrant with acidity and layered in a fascinating texture combining flavors of bay leaf with boysenberry in seamless ways. ? Matt Kettmann
