The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is straight-up awesome and the talents of winemaker Benoit Touquette cannot be overstated. Incredible blue fruits dark chocolate graphite Haut-Brion-like scorched earth and smoke all soar from this majestic full-bodied massively concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. It reminds me of the 2013 and has that rare mix of power opulence and elegance. This utterly classic Dr. Crane deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will blow you away over the following 20 years. Even after tasting 8 to 12 thousand wines for close to 15 years now this beauty still stopped me in my tracks.

The 2021 Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard with 5% Petit Verdot in the blend is deep garnet-purple in color. Quite closed to start off it requires a lot of shaking to wake up notes of blackcurrant pastilles juicy blackberries and fresh plums plus suggestions of crushed rocks candied violets dark chocolate and licorice with a touch of iron ore. The full-bodied palate delivers a firm fine-grained texture and seamless freshness supporting the taut muscular black fruits finishing with a firework display of mineral floral and chocolaty notes. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is a soft sensual wine as so many wines from this site can be. Silky plush contours wrap around a core of red/purplish fruit rose petals cinnamon cedar and new leather. A wine of finesse and understatement the 2021 is very beautiful but also a bit less showy than it can be. - By Antonio Galloni on December 2023 Realm is without question the most ambitious winery in Napa Valley today. Realizing the perils of depending solely on purchased fruit principals Scott Becker and Benoit Touquette have put together an enviable collection of estate vineyards starting with Hartwell in Stags Leap then Farella in Coombsville and most recently Houyi ensuring that Realm will always have a dependable supply of estate fruit. It?s a bold move that has been matched by very few other players in Napa Valley and only one on a large scale that I can think of. I tasted the 2021s at Houyi a spectacular site on Pritchard Hill that also affords striking views of the area. The wines are seriously impressive and also show a gradual move towards a style that favors a bit more vibrancy than in the past. "It was a year with very small berries and high tannins" Touquette explained. "We had to be careful to not extract too much."
